G5 users - What\'s your Processor Setting?

Hey, I am having weird short freezing problems with my G5 and I have narrowed it down to processor issues (I have replaced the logic board, ram, etc - all the stuff you could imagine). Anyway, what are your settings in protools for processor usage on a dual machine? 99%? Thanks m

Well, the first thing I would check is under 'Energy Saver'... Make sure your Processor Performance is set to Highest, not Automatic. (Automatic will cause the problems you describe) You really shouldn't have your Processor settings in ProTools any higher than about 85-90%. If you're having problems at 85%, then there's definitely something wrong. You can always lower it a bit to solve problems temporarily, but with a TDM system, you should be solid there. If Apple replaced your logic board, then they must have found a problem with it, because they usually don't do anything unless the hardware test found a problem. Keep us posted! Cheers

On a Dual machine 99% is no problem at all. The second processor is used about 30% by ProTools and the rest is for system reponse, redraws etc.

Hey G5 users - is the fan noise a problem for you?

Fan noise no problem. They are the quietest machines I have worked with. Mixchump - still having problems. I am working on processor settings now to see if I can get that to work.

My dual 2GHz G5 (first generation) was quite noisy when I first got it - I had a look in the system log inside the System Profiler and noticed that the fans weren't calibrated, so I took it to the Apple Store and they hooked me up. Turns out I had a bad processor - now it's very quiet. Check it out before too long... Richard

Right on dude! Next time I'm in NY, I'll drop by... So far so good? If you toss a whole bunch of ram in there, you'll be amazed how much RTAS you can run on the Dual 2gig before you even hit the TDM... Just for the record, it took me a while to figure that one out.
