engine/clutch judder from cold start

I have an s60 D5 which has done about 52K since new in July 05. Ever since we have had it (2 months) it will judder and not take up a smooth start in first gear when cold. It is worse if you are crawling very slowly and then try to engage the clutch again. It is fine when warm and there does not appear to be any other problems with the clutch etc. There is a clonking noise during some 1st,2nd,3rd gear changes espeicially when going down the gears. I have read that the upper engine mounts can be an issue. I have the newer square one and I have checked it out visually and it appears to be slightly worn (rubber residue on the aluminium housing). However I took it to Volvo today and they say it is not worn and wouldn't replace it under extended warrenty. I don't know what else this could be, volvo have had it twice and say they can't find any problem. Anyone got any ideas?, could it be this engine mount?

I had a warranty issue on my v70 D5 and through not being on the ball I allowed the miles to go to 60050 thinking that the main dealer would be reasonable , they wouldnt look at it without being paid , they advised me that 1 mile over 60k and thats your lot . My car has 126k on the clock now and the top engine mount has been knackered for a long time but the symptons are not as bad as you describe just a slight clonking now and again and mine is completely detatched , its asking for trouble putting extra strain on the bottom engine mounts but have lots of other repairs having more priority so I drive very carefully and try not to accelerate or brake much , what you describe sounds much worse , if I had the car I would be back at the main dealer insisting they do something about it . Your warranty is worth a real amount of money , I personally didnt appreciate the value of it until it was gone , dont leave it too late .

The judder is very common in a few cars especially vauxhalls, i think i'm right in saying that they admit there is a problem with the modern clutch linings / clutch plates, I read on another forum that deprssing the cluch a few times before starting off in the morning can help (maybe!)

I mentioned in another clutch juddering post that my 2003 V70 D5 did that for about 2 years until I took it on a trip to Frankfurt last September which included some 130mph runs on the Autobahns, and its been good as gold ever since. No idea what it could have done to heal itself, but its now a problem that doesn't need fixing

mine is still doing it occasionally, so i will take it for a real blast over the weekend with some quick starts. BTW I did a high speed run the other month after the other person saying about is going away, but as it was in this country and i didn't fancy loosing my licence I chickened out after a little while past the three figure speed mark
